After visiting your favorite summer destination last April, cool down and learn something new from the writing, art and poetry appreciation seminars offered by Designed by Words Writers’ Workshop this May:
“Writing About Art: An Art Appreciation Seminar” will be held on May 16 from 9 am to 5 pm. In this seminar, the participants will have an opportunity to encounter a wide variety of abstract and figurative works in a gallery set-up. As a form of interacting with and creating a response towards the artwork, participants will be taught and guided on how to write down their impressions and insights as a preliminary exercise on writing about art. To be held at the Avellana Art Gallery.
“Lighting the Lamp in a Hurricane: A Poetry Appreciation Seminar” will be held on May 23 from 2-5pm, featuring poet Carlomar Arcangel Daoana. The seminar will give the reader a more familiar grasp of the poetic language that will help him read a poem with a broader and more creative and critical perspective. Recent attendees of this seminar, mostly teachers and retirees, enjoyed an afternoon of poetry which shed light on their preconceptions about the subject.
“Writing the Personal Essay” will be held on May 30, featuring writer Cathy Paras-Lara. A one-day introductory course on the fundamental techniques of the personal essay, the workshop will familiarize the student with the elements of essay, importance of tone and voice, and creative ways in generating ideas for a piece. Cathy is an alumna of Barnard College, Columbia University, where she majored in English Literature with a concentration in Dance. Her book, Everyday Warriors: The Faces and Stories of Breast Cancer, was recently published by the University of Santo Tomas Publishing House.
